Pakistan is going to host the next Asia Cup which is going to be held in 2020, Asian Cricket Council(ACC) has confirmed on Tuesday.
The decision was re-announced in a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council held in Singapore. Representatives from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan were present during the meeting. The decision to give hosting rights to Pakistan was taken in the ACC meeting held at Dhaka in 2018.
The next Asia Cup would be played in 2020, will be hosted by Pakistan and the hosting right belongs to them. Where they will arrange the tournament, it’s up to them, ACC President Nazmul Hasan told media after chairing an executive board meeting of the council at Dhaka.
Where Asia Cup 2020 will be played?
Asia Cup, which will be of T20 format this time, will be held in September 2020, a month prior to T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia.
It is yet to be decided whether the tournament is going to be played in Pakistan or UAE, the second home to Pakistan Cricket.
However, it is more likely for Pakistan to opt UAE, a neutral territory because it seems difficult for Indian Cricket team to play in Pakistan as latter has not visited Pakistan since June 2008 due to a political rift between the two neighbors.
If Pakistan decides to hold the tournament in its territory, then the participation of defending champions, India is in serious doubts as the already deteriorating bilateral ties between the rivals have worsened after Pulwama attack and the following air dogfight and military standoff between Pakistan and India. And there were voices in India demanding the boycott of high voltage clash of arch-rivals, which will on June 16 at Old Trafford.
Decision of ACC on Asia Cup 2020 Venue
However, the Asian Cricket Council has decided to shift the venue to a neutral territory, the UAE, if diplomatic ties do not improve between Pakistan and India. The similar practice was adopted in 2018 when the venue was shifted to UAE from India.
Last time Pakistan hosted any ACC event was in 2008, when 50 over Asia Cup was held in Pakistan.
Pakistan Cricket History as a Host
Although Pakistan hosted T20Is against World XI and Sri Lanka in 2017 and a series with West Indies in the previous year, Pakistani cricket enthusiasts are still waiting for the complete return of cricket to their homeland after the attacks on Sri Lankan Cricket team at Lahore in 2009 blocked the way of International Cricket to the cricket loving nation.
According to the sources, Pakistan also requested Sri Lanka’s cricket officials to dispatch their security team to review the security arrangements made by Pakistan.
On the other hand, Asian Cricket Council also reasserted its commitment to make Cricket a part of 2022 Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China. The decision to include cricket in 2022 Asian Games was made in Bangkok in March 2018 by Olympic Council of Asia’s General Assembly.
Pakistan is going to lock horns with the Caribbean team, West Indies in its opening World Cup match on May 31, at Trent Bridge.
