Indian skipper, Virat Kohli is known globally for his brilliant batting and amazing records but there is another side of ‘king’ Kohli too. Virat Kohli is quite generous in gifting his bat to the players from other teams. Muhammad Amir, the veteran Pakistani pacer, got the one, English female cricketer Danielle Wyat was the next one and now Afghanistan’s sensational spin bowling icon, Rashid Khan revealed to get one from the consistent Indian batsman.
But unfortunately, this ‘special’ bat, as referred by star spinner, was grabbed by his Afghan teammate.
While speaking to cricket.com.au just before their opening match against the Aussies, Afghanistan’s player disclosed that he is in habit of collecting the ‘special’ bats from the cricketing greats like KL Rahul, David Warner and now Virat Kohli. He said that as he is learning the batting skills apart from his brilliance in spin bowling so he needs these bats to get inspiration.
“When you are (learning) the skills of batting, you need to have a good bat. I got a few from the players. I got one from Virat (Kohli), I got from Davey (David Warner), I got one from KL Rahul and those are special bats. That will help me to make some runs in the World Cup, ” Khan was quoted as saying.
When asked why he considers the bat gifted from Kohli as special, 20-year spinner from Nangarhar, Afghanistan revealed certain magics of that bat which he noticed while batting against Ireland.
“I was like ‘what happened? That went for six? I was like ‘there is something in the bat’. I loved the bat. It was like every ball I hit went for six. There was something special in that bat, ” Rashid said.
However, to his dismay, this bat caught the eye of Asghar Afghan, the skipper of Afghanistan cricket team, and he took the bat from the youngster as soon as he noticed it.
“As soon as I came to the pavilion, our previous captain Asghar Afghan, he came up to me and said, ‘give me that bat’ and I was like ‘oh no’. He had already taken it out from my bag and put it in his own bag,” Rashid stated.
Young spinner was a bit disappointed at this move by his Captain. However, he hopes to get it back as the skipper’s venture with the bat may not go well.
“That was a special bat, from a special player as well. He took that bat and I hope he doesn’t do well with that and gives it back.” Rashid Khan went on to say with a smile on his face.
Afghanistan cricket team is an inspiration for the whole cricketing world. From only one win in their World Cup debut in 2015, they had emerged as a strong unit when they tied the match with India in Asia Cup. And now they have defeated Pakistan in the warm-up match. Afghanistan are playing against the Aussies in their World Cup opener at Bristol county ground. They will take on Sri Lanka on June 4 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
